Finding wedding attire is so difficult for Lesbian couples. Going into a men's shop and buying a suit is difficult. The woman's body is made differently and many shops are not attuned to fitting women.

So today I am talking to the mature bride, Bride marrying for the second or third time, the lesbian couple, or anyone who does not necessarily want to wear a dress or wedding gown, but wants to maintain a look of soft femininity. A beautiful suit - paired with just a flower gracing the hair, or a fabulous cage veil - creates a very sophisticated and feminine look. I'm going to show a lot of white suits, but the suit doesn't necessarily have to be white.

Tantalizing Thursday - a Celebration of Tradition

The Chuppah

The Chuppah or Bridal canopy is the central tradition in most Jewish weddings. Typically, it's made of a cloth covering attached to four poles that are burrowed into the ground, or supported by four honored friends or family members. Always open on all sides, The Chuppah symbolizes the new Jewish home that the couple creates for each other. During the ceremony, the couple, their parents, the Rabbi, and often the Bridal attendants will stand underneath the Chuppah.

Chuppahs are traditionally made. Sometimes people will use their grandparent's Chuppah, or make their own. One of my Brides had a very beautiful Chuppah - which was sewn together from individual squares by members of her immediate family. Chuppahs can also be rented, and adorned with flowers and other decorations.

I tell my clients that if you want to cut costs at your reception, the champagne toast should be the first to go. However, if you want to do it, it should be done right. The reason that champagne remains the benchmark for sparkling wines the world over is because no other location can mimic or rival the unique terroir of the French Champagne region.

There are so many different brands - so how do you choose?

You cannot go wrong with Moet and Chandon or Veuve Cliquot. For those of you who like to flash the cash, then Louis Roederer's Cristal is the choice for you.

If you really want to impress, you should serve Salon. This uber expensive fizz - about $500.00 a bottle, will impress even the most discerning palettes. Perhaps you should save this exclusive bubbly for your 10th, 15th or even 20th anniversary - since sightings are as rare as the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Pay attention to the label! NV or non-vintage is often the "house champagne" - a mix of many grapes (chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier) without regard to local terrior or vintage. Ostentation aside, "the more expensive the better", is correct when it comes to champagne. The most expensive bottlings from the big champagne houses contain a higher proportion of their best wines from grand cru and premier cru vineyards.

When buying champagne...

Brut is the driest - if you want a great champagne, get Brut
Extra-dry is less dry than Brut
Sec is sweet
Demi-sec is the sweetest - a great accompaniment to dessert

Cote du-Rhone-Villages A work horse appellation of southern Rhone. Many wines can be gotten for under $25-30. Most are meant to be drunk between 2-3 years after bottling.

Cote du Rhone- The main work horse of Southern Rhone. Many bottles can be gotten for less than $20. A true value.

Hermitage is the undisputed king of northern Rhone, producing big, lush tannic reds from primarily Syrah grapes. Hermitage wines are capable of aging well and can be quite pricey.

From Top to bottom Right...

Alain Vogue Dotes du Rhone Les Peyrouses - 100% Syrah grapes from the northern Rhone region. This wine is purple in color and has an intense flavor of ripe cherries. This wine is great paired with grilled meat and veal. Less than $20.00

A Special Monday - Thank you!

Today is a special day, because it's in celebration of a man who fought and died, with countless others - so that I could be and do what I'm doing today!

To those people, I say Thank You!

Whether you recognize his fight or not - it can be applied to everyone because persecution is the common thread that bonds us all together. In his speech - he says that we all must walk together and no man can stand on his own. No-one exists in a vacuum. One fight is everyone's fight.

I don't care whether you are black or white, Jewish or Catholic, straight or gay - there is someone, somewhere - in all of us - who fought, suffered, and died so that we are able to live. There are also people out there today who are still fighting - and dying.

So, it's to all those people - past, present and future - that I say Thank You!

Also, to a single man, who had the courage and fortitude - with his words - to not only inspire a people, but also a nation - and a world.

I say - Thank You! From the bottom of my heart.

In dedication to you and the countless others...

When I was in college, I used a travel agent once to book my flight home. I know you book hotels, but what else do you do?

In addition to booking hotels, I sell the following:

-All-inclusive packages

-Bed and Breakfast

-Cruises

-Car rentals

-Tours/excursions

-Convention space

-Reserve/block rooms for destination weddings/renewals/anniversaries/reunions, etc.

Why should we use a travel agent, when we can book our honeymoon on Travelocity or another online source? Money is pretty important to us. What if the online source is cheaper?

It also goes by the old saying, “You get what you pay for.” On-line travel engines do not sell the product, they sell the price. And, there’s nothing worse than entering your honeymoon suite with roaches and stained linen on your beds due to booking a hotel based on the price and not on what was recommended. You can never be too sure in trusting on-line reviews.

Travel engines are not always cheaper either. As travel agents, we are well connected. And by working with an agent that’s in good standing with many vendors, they are most likely to offer you a better deal with better perks. Remember, price does not always outweigh value, especially not on your honeymoon.

How much do you cost?

I do not charge a service fee for trips that are paid in full. If a payment plan is arranged or assistance is needed with booking air or car rentals, then a $15 service fee is implemented.

Can you get me any deals? Better than what I can find online?

Yes, I receive promotions daily. Another good thing about working with an agent is that sometimes promotions are only offered to agents working with honeymooners. They are not always released to the public in order to reserve space for those celebrating special occasions.

Do you have an office? Frankly, I’ve traveled all over the tri-state area looking for wedding vendors. I’m tired.

Clients are welcome to my home office anytime located in Baltimore County (Windsor Mills, MD). Or, I am available to meet with couples within a reasonable radius.

I’m not really sure what I’m doing. Right now, I am just looking online. Can I meet with you anyway?

Sure, it’s my job to guide couples in the right direction. Prior to meeting, I suggest couples calling me first to make sure we both at least have an idea as to where they would like to travel.

I am having budget concerns. The wedding has gone over budget and I don’t have a lot of money to spend on a honeymoon. Can you help?

Most certainly. I not only assist couples in planning honeymoons based on interests, but based on budgets that are fitting to each individual couple, also.

Do you specialize in any particular destinations? What if I decide to go to a location where you do not specialize?

Yes, my agency specializes in Mexico, the Caribbean, and the U.S. Although, one of the great things about working with a certified agent is knowing that they are well-connected and knowledgeable about the world, even though they don’t specialize in that particular destination. I am still able to tell you several do’s and don’ts about certain destinations. I also network with a number of agents and vendors. I can assure you that I would not send a couple on their honeymoon without knowing that it is securely planned and reserved through credible service providers.

What if something happens on the honeymoon – like I get mugged? What do I do? Do you offer travel insurance (or work with a company that does).

This is a good point. I strongly encourage you to read my blog, “When Tragedy Strikes: How to Safely Plan Your Dream Honeymoon”. Safety is key and knowing what to do and what not to do is even more important. I always review and discuss the latest events taking place at couples’ desired destination prior to making reservations and departure. This is why it’s important to purchase travel insurance in case of emergencies.

In extreme emergencies, remain calm as much as possible. Locate a local emergency official as soon as possible. Afterwards, notify your hotel’s security, and then contact your agent to assist in contacting emergency contacts, such as insurance carriers, medical providers, even family members. Travelocity and Expedia can’t do that for you.

I spent thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars to make sure that I had a “green wedding”. It is really important to us. I want to make sure that our honeymoon is also “green”. We want places which offer organic food. We want to stay in sustainable locations powered by wind or solar. We want a really natural experience. Can you help?

Sure. Eco-friendly or “green” honeymoons are all the rave right now, and many hotels and resorts are on board. Selecting a location that concerves energy via solar power and uses organic linen is not such a hard task anymore. Check out the following “green” locations that made Island magazine’s top list for 2009:

Tantalizing Thursday - A Celebration of Love

Love is all around us and should be shouted from rooftops. A union built out of love and mutual respect is rare - and when found - should be celebrated.

We very much enjoy - and want to continue - helping same sex couples celebrate one of life's most special and intimate moments - a moment that will be savored and remembered forever. We look forward to the day when all are afforded equal protection and rights under the states governments.

Whatever the case may be - we will continue to embrace all people and treat them with the due respect and professionalism that everyone very much deserves.

Not that I'm looking forward to the weekend - with two more wonderful days to go - but things are really exciting around here. At least to me! :)

We have finally made the commitment to dust off our website. Boy, was there a lot of dust! The website will look much the same - but will allow us to give you fresh content much more often - which is a fabulous thing!

Also, we are going to move our blog directly onto our website! Bye Bye Blogger! Yes, it's going to be a big transition - and I'm not sure it's always going to be smooth. We will do the best that we can. Make sure you continue to visit us here. We will let you know when we are ready to make the transition.

The most fun change, is that we are rolling out our "video blog" series - which will be premiering this weekend! Yes, we are moving into the 21st century (slowly). Every weekend, we will be offering a DIY project, a tip, or an update on happenings in the industry - which will be done by MOI (and my hubby) on video. I'm totally excited!

Although one cannot deny the activities which attract honeymooners from around the world; such as, scuba diving, the many magnificent beaches that await, the most pristine and unexplored island reef ecosystems in the Indian Ocean that provides refuge for 10 globally threatened bird species and five globally threatened turtle species, and the rich biodiversity - Ibo Island Lodge has also contributed positively to the Ibo way of life!

Kevin and Fiona established this first Ibo Island Eco Lodge in 2007. They built Ibo Island Lodge with a sustainable tourism ethos - giving back to the island community and assisting in the conservation and education of visitors and staff alike.

Poverty among the island’s 4,000 residents was driving slash-and-burn agriculture and habitat loss, unsustainable fishing, and illegal hunting of marine turtles and sharks. It helps enforce national park regulations and engages community members in park patrolling. Ibo’s community trust fund encourages and supports entrepreneurial projects by local people.

Tantalizing Thursday - Sofreh Aghd

Thursday is the day to present beautiful wedding traditions. Jennifer is in her second year with Elegant Event Planning and Design. Jennifer has planned her share of Persian and Middle Eastern Weddings while on Tenure in LA. She has done some fabulous things! So, in honor of her, Thursday is dedicated to all those beautiful traditions - not only in Persian weddings - but different customs from all around the world.

I enjoy making a ceremony more unique and personalized by incorporating beautiful traditions in each and every wedding.

So - sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty and elegant tradition that will unfold before your eyes!

Sofreh Aghd

The ceremony takes place in a specially decorated room with flowers and a beautiful and elaborately decorated spread on the floor called "Sofreh-ye Aghd". Traditionally Sofreh-ye Aghd is set on the floor facing east, the direction of sunrise (light).

On the Sofreh Aghd, are the following...

1. Mirror (of fate) "Aayeneh-ye Bakht" and two Candelabras (representing the bride and groom and brightness in their future) . They symbolize light and fire. The Bride enters the room with her veil. When she sits to the left of her Bridegroom and removes her veil, the first thing he will see in the mirror is his Bride-to-be.

2. A tray of seven multi-colored herbs and spices "Sini-ye Aatel-O-Baatel"- to drive away evil spirits

3. A specially baked and decorated flatbread "Noon-e Sangak" - Prosperity for life.

4. A basket of decorated eggs and a basket of decorated almonds, Walnuts and Hazelnuts for fertility.

5. A basket of pomegranates and/or apples for a joyous future.

6. A cup of rose water extracted from special Persian roses "Gol-e Mohammadi"to make the air sweet

7. A cup of honey to sweeten life. The couple offers the other a dab on their fingertip.

8. Two sugar cones "Kalleh Ghand" made out of hardened sugar to be used during the ceremony. These sugar cones are grinded together above the bride and bridegroom's head (over the scarf held above their heads) throughout the ceremony to shower them in sugar (symbolizing sweetness and happiness).

9. A needle and seven strands of colored thread to figuratively sew up the mother-in-law's lips from speaking unpleasant words to the bride!

10. A brazier "Manghal" holding burning coals sprinkled with wild rue "Espand" a popular incense to bring health to the new family.

11. A bowl of gold coins representing wealth and prosperity.

12. A copy of the couple's Holy Book is placed on the spread. For Christian couples, it would be the Bible, for Zorastians Avesta, For Muslims Qur'an, .... This symbolizes God's blessing for the couple.

13. A Scarf or Shawl made out of Silk or any other fine fabric to be held over the bride and bridegroom's head throughout the ceremony by various happily married female relatives (mostly bride's close family members).

14. A bowl made out of crystallized sugar "Kaas-e Nabaat/Shaakh-e Nabaat" to sweeten life for the newly wed.

I love signature drinks, especially during the summer months. Use something that pulls out your color and style of the wedding. Since I like simple, and I love orange - I chose this delectable Cosmo. So pretty.

Citrus Cosmopolitan
Makes 2-five ounce drinks

2 ounces of orange scented Vodka
2 ounces blood-orange juice
2 ounces Cointreau
2 ounces orange juice
2 ounces of red or pink grapefruit juice
Zest of 1 blood orange

One of the reasons that I love Thomas, besides the fact that his fantastic photojounalistic images are second to none, is the fact that he puts everything out on the table. He will invite you to his office for the first meeting, where he will win you over with his fantastic style, and then offer an all-inclusive package that is top in the area. With his package, there is no second guessing. He lays everything out. It's easy (and you know how much I love simple). The one thing he does do - is to go above and beyond to customize the package for you. If you do not want an inclusion - he is flexible and will work with you to meet all of your needs. When I think of Randy and Tina's creations, I think - clean, sophisticated, creative - all the qualities necessary for a classy wedding. They are the best of the best. If I give Randy a vague idea of what I want in terms of color and style, I get multiple proposals and sketches of what he can do. Each sketch is better than the other. The color, texture and style of their arrangements are cutting edge. The flowers are always of the highest quality; and the design - always spectacular.

I have worked with many caterers in DC Metropolitan area. While there are many great caterers, nobody offers such fantastic food, great personalized service, and offers a variety of rentals as La Prima Catering. La Prima's tastings are complete with different candle arrangements, different linen options, different place setting options, different chairs and different cushions. I have seen it myself - it's quite impressive. They lay all the options right in front of you.

One important thing to me, being a wedding planner, is to have the ability for my client to taste the food prior to signing the contract. Some places will not allow this and others will allow a tasting, but charge a fee. La Prima allows a tasting prior to signing. In fact, I had an African wedding where we wanted to combine the American and African food. La Prima was extremely accommodating in allowing us to bring the African food to the tasting - and went above and beyond to present it elegantly for the client (as it would be served on the day of the wedding).

The event staff is always attentive, and they always respond to questions right away. They take great care to work with each and every budget.

On the day of the wedding, the staff is extremely professional and the spread is always amazing.

There are many wonderful vendors out there but there are very subtle differences between the ones that stand out - differences that are not necessarily noticeable when you call or interview a vendor. In my opinion, it's these subtleties that make all the difference.

Jessica Piscitelli is all of this and more. She is the epitome of "going above and beyond" for her clients. She does more than she needs to - to get the job done. She is passionate, professional, and pleasant.

She is a super quick responder and is always present. You can tell that she loves filming weddings. She moves quietly and quickly but she gets all the shots. Her eye for detail is impeccable, which is a rarity in the industry. More importantly, she works extremely hard and you can tell. Her product is top notch. An expert with the details, Rachel's style transcends time. Documentary in style, she tells her couple's stories through definite defined images - all of them crisp clean, meaningful and taken with purpose. Her use of lighting and the natural surroundings is superb.

I don't think I have seen anyone work like Rachel. She has a unique gift. She is quick and she has wedding hands (you can tell that she knows and loves wedding). Each and every wedding presents it's challenges, and she meets those challenges in extraordinaire ways. What to see an example? Take a look at her most recent blog post. I don't think there are many people who would travel to a wedding, take "beyond belief" pictures - and be as positive as Rachel during a blizzard. You wouldn't even know that she had to overcome insurmountable obstacles because each image is absolute perfection.

Amazing! I think that blog post says it all!

Sorry DC couples - this year, my favorite venue is in Baltimore.

Situated in the middle of the quaint and historic Mount Vernon, The Walters Art Museum is the perfect site for a sophisticated wedding. It's a hidden gem in a big field. Your ceremony and reception will be held in the sculpture court, which is large, light and airy -and can accommodate parties (with a dance floor) for up to 200. The openness of the space naturally lends itself to creativity in table arrangements and sizes. Your cocktail hour will be one of a kind with the ability to treat your guests to some of the finest art in the area.

Easily accessible, there is ample parking and elegant accommodations nearby -making it easy for your guests to enjoy the festivities.

Catering at the Walters is a dream. You have the freedom to "use who you want"! If your caterer of choice is not on the list, it's easy to get them approved. There are minimal roadblocks along the way.

The "rules" of the museum are not much different than any other museum. It's of utmost importance to preserve the priceless works of art, therefore, no red wine and music must be within a particular range. Tables and chairs must be moved in a certain way - but all of the logistics are cleared with your caterer prior to the big day!

The event director at the Museum is a dream to work with. He's easy, available and always willing to answer questions by phone or email.

Since your tents ultimately become an integral part of your venue, and thus a very important component, it's important that you hire a reputable and reliable company. Don't skimp on this part - simply because, the tent is so important to the success of your event.

1. Customer service - they will come out to your house to speak to you about all the options, to measure, and give advice.

2. They will provide drawings.

Stylish Tuesday - Anne Barge

Anne Barge is my favorite designer, and has been since I began Elegant Event Planning and Design. My first bride wore an Anne Barge dress, which was a sleeveless, simple silk a line gown with boxed pleats. For over 7 years, that dress has stuck out in my mind as one of the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen. Anne Barge is known for her classic designs. Her dresses are of impeccable quality, both in construction and fit. She uses pure silk couture fabrics and simple clean lines and accents them with delicate embroidery and beading. Each dress is a work of art. Her work is classic, and reminds me of icons such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn.

The things I like about her dresses are their timeless nature. Whether they were a part of her 1998 or 2008 collections, the dresses are beautiful and relevant in today’s world – something I cannot say for many designers.

I want to share with you, some of the elegant simplicity that she has blessed Brides’ with over the last 10 years.

Registry Glossary

When registering and choosing patters for tableware, a bride needs to know basic terminology of classification in each group - dinnerware, stemware and flatware.

Dinnerware Glossary

Earthenware - Made from less refined clays than china, it is a low fired which causes it to remain relatively soft and porous. Because of this, it is less durable than china or porcelain, but more cost effective due to it’s rapid manufacturing. Brightly colored dinnerware often fall into this category, such as Fiestaware. Don’t let it’s durable appearance fool you, Earthenware is much less durable than china and bone china.

Stoneware - Bridges the gap between earthenware and china. Like china, it is fired at high temperatures so that it is hard, smooth and non-porous. However, it is made of course, sandy clays s which burn to a dark color. It has an earthy appearance often decorated with bright decals. It does lack the delicacy of fine china.

China - A ceramic made of white clay and pulverized stone, fired at a high temperature. It is thin, translucent, resistant to chipping and/or breaking. It will ring when tapped.

Bone China - In addition to china clays, this ceramic product contains a percentage of bone ash, giving it a characteristic whiteness. Neither china or bone china will absorb grease or water when the glaze is chipped.

Porcelain - A fine, hard translucent material made from kaolin, quartz and feldspar and fired at high temperature. It is translucent and hard. Like china, porcelain will not absorb grease or water and is just as durable.

Stemware glossary

Glass - Essentially a mixture of sand, potash and lime or lead oxide which is then melted under high temperatures along with other ingredients to give it specific qualities of color, strength and refraction. Once melted, the molten glass is either molded or blown.

Crystal - To qualify as crystal, lead oxide is added to the potash and soda.

Lead Crystal - Glass that contains at least 24%-32% lead oxide. The lead imports brilliance and is responsible for the bell-like tone that is produced when the piece is struck.

Flatware glossary

Sterling - The queen of flatware, made of 925 parts of pure silver and 75 parts of an alloy. The advantages to sterling are the following;

-it is the most hygienic metal known to man

- It does not give off substances that affect the taste of food

- it is hard and very wear resistant

- Sterling is a precious metal and lasts almost forever

- It becomes heritage for future generations, therefore a wise investment

- If used frequently, it will not tarnish. It’s easy to wash .

Silverplate - Made from a base metal and electroplated with pure silver.

Stainless - Made from a steel allow with chromium so as to inhibit corrosion and rust. The best quality stainless is marked “18/8” the ratio of chromium and nickel used to make stainless. This is the most price “sensitive option” due to it’s easy manufacturing. It also comes in a variety of patterns.

I typically do not share things about myself to my clients. However, weddings are personal occasions, and my clients often share personal things about them and their family dynamics with me. Sometimes it’s nice knowing a bit more about the person you are working closely with, so now it’s my turn to share a bit more about me – and my thoughts. None of these musings are wedding related, but will give you more insight into my “quirky” personality.

I believe in…

1. Honesty and integrity are of utmost importance, but tact - even more so. I never understood why being hurtful teaches anyone a lesson.

2. I’m a Republican and Democrat – a conservative and a liberal. I see valid points on all sides, and also see misguided opinion on all sides. I just vote for the person that agrees with me most on the issues that most matter to me.

3. Make love, not war. However, if you are going to do it, it should be done with responsibility as to not hurt yourself, anyone else, or to get yourself in a situation you are not ready for.

4. Animals – they are so cute. As a child, I loved a Cockapoo for 15 years. Her name was Useless. Yeah, I know - it was my Dad’s decision. Pets keep you young. They are always there to love you – no matter what.

5. I met my first boyfriend at 20, and married him at 27.

6. Don’t ask me my age, it will probably be a lie.

7. I would say that my sense of humor is more “dry”. However, I cannot stand Woody Allen (too neurotic), and I LOVE Will Ferrell.

8. Love is irrational and is not to be understood – just felt.

9. I love the people in my life who make me laugh.

10. I love creating wedding planning and design proposals. It makes me excited to dream about all the possibilities.

11. I love my two children so much – it almost hurts. If I believed they were in danger, and I could save them by giving my life – I would in a second.

12. I idolized Dorothy Hamill – 70’s haircut and all!

13. Adequate back-up. Life is unpredictable.

14. My Dad died because he felt worthless in this world.

15. I played “first” clarinet in my elementary and Junior high school band.

16. I don’t understand why people kill to prove killing is wrong. However, I am a proponent of the Death Penalty. Not sure how to rationalize this in my mind - I’m conflicted. Good thing it’s not one of those issues I alluded to in item #2.

17. I’m a Capricorn.

18. I aspire to be the best. I am not afraid of it. However, I am afraid of lower standards - as being “good enough” is not “good enough” for me. Ultimately, it’s not the end result that matters – but the process.

19. Everything in life happens for a reason – we just might not understand it at the time.

20. I love the “Golden Girls” because they make me "laugh out loud". I have seen every episode 5 times – at least. It’s unfortunate that “they” don’t make TV like that anymore.

21. I spent 4 years in an advanced science and Math magnet in high school, 4 years at Smith College studying Biology and Chemistry, and 8.5 years in a PhD program in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Brown. It took me all that time to find my true calling. If that’s not interesting, I don’t know what is.

In my case, there have been many instances where my clients needed to pick up a special dessert, and Dina has arranged for them to pick it up in a location that’s close to their house or work. What’s better about not having to worry about driving hours out of your way and taking time off of work – to taste their awesome Crème Brule?!

More importantly they have gone above and beyond for my clients – always! At the tastings, there is always an abundance of linen choices that would go well with the color or theme of the wedding. There are different decor ideas, from sample candle arrangements, different votive holders, different plate and glass options, chairs and cushion covers, and the like. They work with multiple rental companies, and therefore, are able to get almost anything. Receiving Line Etiquette

The receiving line is a lovely tradition. It gives the couple, their parents and wedding party the opportunity to great all guests. In a large wedding, this may be the only opportunity for guests to offer their congratulations to the newlyweds. The receiving line traditionally takes place at the reception, but can also take place at in the Church vestibule or on the stairs right outside - time permitting. A church is the ideal location to hold your receiving line, if all guests are not invited to the reception. Participants of the receiving line are as follows:

Who you include in your receiving line is up to you. I often suggest that you eliminate wedding party members (Bridesmaids and Maid/Matron of Honor) to save time – which may be a limiting factor. It’s totally acceptable not to include Fathers, and instead they can circulate amongst the crowed. If Mothers are remarried, Stepfathers can be included if you wish.

Just as some line tips.

1. As stated above, only include the essential members - so that your guests do not face a long and tedious wait.

2. Serve refreshments to your guests while they wait.

3. Conversation should be brief but pleasant.

4. The Bride (and Bridesmaids if included) should keep the bouquet in their left hands, or place it to the side while in the line.

5. Any accessories worn during the ceremony should be worn in the receiving line (hats, gloves, etc).

6. The Bride can kiss those guests which she knows well; otherwise a handshake is appropriate.

Some couples elect to eliminate the receiving line, instead, circulating with their guests throughout the reception. If you choose to eliminate the receiving line, you have the responsibility of greeting each and every guest at the reception.

As an alternative to the receiving line at the Church, the Bride and Groom can re-enter after the processional to greet guests as they exit the church - which eliminates awkwardness if the parents are divorced or do not wish to participate in a formal receiving line.

Regardless of your plans, it’s imperative that you make sure to introduce your new husband in the proper manner. There is a simple rule of thumb: When making an introduction, present the lower “ranking” person to the higher “ranking” person. Here is how to determine status:

An older person outranks a younger person
Someone senior or more important at work outranks someone less senior/less important at work
An out of town guest outranks a local guest of equal status
A person serving religious ministry outranks a lay person

So, when you are introducing your new hubby to your aunt (who is 20 years older), you would say “Auntie Charlie, may I present my husband, Bryant Nelson. Bryant, this is my Aunt, Miss Charlene Powell.

This indicates that your new husband would call your Aunt “Miss Powell”, until it is indicated that he can call her by a more informal name. It’s a good rule of thumb to use the formal name of a senior person.

Bands and DJ's

This blog is not about whether a band or a DJ is better. When it comes to this topic, there is not one that’s better than the other. It’s about making the best choice for you, your wedding and your guests.

The entertainment portion is extremely important to the success of your event. If your reception is one where music and dancing are central, you will find that this will be the most important decision that you will make. It is clearly apparent when your guests are not being entertained because it becomes awkward if your band or DJ cannot get people on the dance floor. You will soon see that your guests become bored and begin leaving – en mass. Not good. So, I want to address some of the items you need to think about when you are debating between hiring a band or a DJ.

1. You need to think about you and your fiancé’s musical tastes. Are both you and your fiancé similar? Do you like one musical genre over the other, or do you like music from all across the board? Do you like hearing the music in its pure form (from the artist)? If you enjoy the music and are inspired to dance, your guests will follow suit - even if it’s not exactly their taste. It’s amazing how your guests will follow your lead. If you are not on the dance floor, it’s more difficult to motivate them to dance. If you are not motivated y the music, you will not dance.

2. What are the ages of your guests (average) or is your crowd mixed? If they are older, perhaps music from an older era would work better than the new stuff. Younger people might enjoy 90’s music, while an older crowed might not have as much appreciation. Depending upon your crowd, 80’s music might work for everyone.

3. Ethnicity – is our crowed mixed or largely one ethnic group over another? For instance, at a Korean wedding, one might have a higher percentage of Korean guests. Therefore, you might need someone who knows Korean music and is familiar with Korean customs.

4. What is your budget? Do you have an entertainment budget of $1,500.00 or $6,000.00+?

Bands are significantly more expensive than DJ’s. It’s just not the outright fee. It’s more expensive to feed 7 people than it is to feed 1 or 2. Band contracts often require that beer/alcohol be available to band members, which is unheard of for a DJ (make sure you read those contracts closely). In the Washington DC and New England areas, you should expect to pay at least $5,000.00 for a good 5-6 person band. Expect the cost goes up as you add pieces and artist. Additionally, the popularity of the band contributes to the price.

Bands are also less versatile than DJ’s. You have to find the band that best fits you and your guests. They come with playlists, and you must choose songs off the playlist. If you have a special song that’s not on the list, be prepared to pay the band (above and beyond their fee) to learn it. If you want an obscure version of a song played, you might have a hard time. Bands can always play CD’s, and do during their breaks between sets.

Bands have finite time for playing. If you are extending – be prepared for pricey extension fees.

With that said, there is something totally cool about live music. A band really puts people in the partying mood. I have never had an unsuccessful reception when there was a great band. A band lights up the room.

DJ’s are wonderful too. I love a great DJ who knows how to read a crowd! With a DJ, your possibilities are only limited by your imagination – and iTunes. If you have a special song, it can be downloaded. Not to worry about obscure versions of your first dance song. A good DJ will know how to find it!

With a DJ, you can also go across the board with music. You can play a little rap, a little light rock, R&B, and big band – whatever. You are not limited to defined playlists.

DJ’s are less expensive. In this area, a good DJ ranges in price $1,200.00-$2,000.00 – and this is only a fraction of the cost of a band. I would advise you to hire a knowledgeable wedding DJ. Weddings are unique events that require special talent and skill.

DJ’s are not live – and although a good DJ will keep the crowed going, it’s not the same as having a live band. Often times, for my clients who opt for DJ’s but still want live music, I suggest hiring a pianist, chamber players, guitarist, harpist, etc for the ceremony and cocktail hour. This way, you get the best of both worlds and the live ceremony and cocktail hour music is a unique touch.

In my humble opinion, and your pocket book can swing it, the best of all is to have both. The band plays and the DJ plays during the band breaks and after the band ends (if you are extending late into the evening). They work together beautifully!

A Night of Enchantment

Washington DC in March is one of the most beautiful places. New life abound – the cherry blossoms blooming – a first hand view of Washington DC’s most stunning monuments. With the floor to ceiling atrium windows, I cannot imagine a more beautiful wedding reception than treating your guests to a front row view of Washington DC -while cruising around the Potomac. This is exactly what this couple treated their 150 guests to – a night of enchantment.

This wonderful couple, brought together by fate, came from two entirely different backgrounds – hers Korean – and his American, but both totally in love. They combined their love to treat their guests to a multicultural affair that both they and their guests will forever remember. Adorned in a beautiful designer gown and him in a tux, they renewed their vows in high fashion-while docked in Washington DC’s SE side, known for its great harbor and even better seafood. After the ceremony, the ship “set sail” to a cruise of magnificent proportions.

After an abundant cocktail hour of heavy Hors D’oeuvres and drink, guests were able to order of menus and feasted on a 3 course meal fit for kings/queens! While eating, the Bride and Groom partook in many traditional wedding rituals; such as, the First dance and parent dances. After dinner, the 5 piece band opened the floor to all guests!

The Bride and Groom cut their simple 3 tiered cake, and quickly went to change for the traditional Korean bowing ceremony. Guests were treated to an elegant Chocolate Foutain, with a variety of fresh fruit and sweets as an accompaniment to the delicous yellow wedding cake.

Dressed in traditional Hanbok, the Bride and Groom made their way from table to table and bowed, offering thanks and respect to all of their guests. After the bowing ceremony, the Bride and Groom cut the traditional Korean Rice Cake, which we distributed with traditional Korean desserts as guests exited the vessel.

The night seemed to end as soon as it started. The simple set up lead to a magnificent evening full of light, love, Washington DC sites, but more importantly a memorable occasion for all!

The Bouquets of Elegant Event Planning and Design

This is going to be a beautiful entry. Check out all of our clients' gorgeous bouquets. I hope you are able to get some fabulous ideas! It looks like roses have been very popular over the years.

White and black was the flavor for the evening. A simple nosegay of white roses with just a hint of pink makes for a beautiful Virginia evening. Look at the flower in her hair!

Gentle pink tones was the color scheme, but the pure white nosegay sets off her elegant, but simple look.

For a tall sophisticated bride, this is a very classic choice. This Bride had a Burgundy theme for their wedding.

Brides' love hot pink. These casual Gerber Daisies really set off this more nice home wedding.

Simple white and greenery makes for a classic wedding.

Red, yellow and orange has been very popular this year for us! Here is a non-formed nosegay of red, yellow and orange. Bridesmaids carried button mums.

Hot pink roses with a collar of greens.

Stately blue hydrangea and ivory roses set off this very elegant wedding.

A yellow and blue colors scheme with jewels and swans. We put tiny jewels in this bouquet. If you had heirloom jewelry, that would be perfect in a bouquet like this.

This wedding was in Newport, RI. She wanted things colorful! This large nosegay was hot pink, orange and Green - roses abound. On her tables, we had different colored silk overlays. It was gorgeous!

This Bride loved pink, so we designed a simple rose nosegay of pink and ivory.

Her colors were celedon and blue. We used celedon orchids with hints of pink, and then used hot pink for her accent color. The Bridesmaids carried blue and celedon hydrangea.

Her colors were Ivory, cappuccino, and celedon. We used ivory with a hint of light green roses to make the bouquet pop.

Her colors were ivory and hunter. Since Ivory doesn't "pop" from a white dress, we used peach to bring it out.

Cutting Wedding Costs - A Comprehensive List

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, and the entrance into the season which is not known for "saving" - here is a list of suggestions on how to cut your wedding costs.

1. Cut the guest list - if possible. Sometimes it's not possible due to family situations etc. This is the number 1 way of cutting costs.

2. Freelance photographer – A great “freelance” photographer might fit the bill. Often, the wedding is looked through a fresh and creative lens. Expensive back-end costs are often reduced. Warning – if a professional album is your goal, this might not be a viable option for you. Tip - one might even reduce their cost, for a chance at getting a great wedding in their portfolio!

3. Trunk shows and sample sales are great!

4. Opting for a smaller "show" cake and offering sheet cakes in the back.

5. Cutting the alcohol out of your bar (they will survive one night, I promise). Nobody is saying that you have to offer, but if you offer it - you should pay for it.

6. Choosing a venue that has table, chairs, glassware, silver, etc. Covering the chairs is not as expensive as renting ones (if you find an economic rental solution. Don’t rent the covers through the venue).

7. Choosing a venue you are happy with, decor wise - choosing a venue that you do not like because it’s inexpensive, and then paying twice the rental fee in decor - is not a good plan.

8. Cutting out favors, or combining favors and place cards into one offering.

10. Make every aspect of your wedding matter. Follow this rule of thumb, “don’t just do it because you think you “need’ to do it. Do it because it has a significance to you, your fiancé, your families (collectively) and your guests”. Make the significance known to everyone.

9. Downsize your wedding party (or no wedding party at all).

10. Ceremony and reception in one place - no need to transport yourselves and/or your guests.

11. Renting instead of buying. Check prices. You will only use this stuff once, and renting will eliminate the need to sell afterwards.

12. Getting married during the “off” season. Many vendors would love to work early December, January and February - when things are typically quiet. They might even offer you a terrific deal if you give them your wedding!

13. Custom made dress as opposed to buying a gown at a bridal salon. I had a bride who loved a $3,500.00 dress. We got a dress made out of "real" silk satin, a cathedral veil which was lined in the same fabric, and a bolero jacket - all for $2,000.00. If that’s not cost savings, I don't know what is.

15. Create a realistic budget and prioritize. Be honest to yourself and your vendors about how much you can and/or want to spend on your big day.

16. Hire a planner who has a strong network of vendors that they always use. This will save you time and money.

I hope this list will offer you realistic ideas on not only helping you cut costs, but also on maintaining the spirit of your day!

Christopher Dunn is an accomplished classically trained guitarist, residing in the Baltimore area. He is the owner of Classical Guitar Ceremonies, Inc - providing music for weddings and other upscale events in Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, Delaware and Pennsylvania.

A native of Maryland, Chris received his Bachelors of Music, Masters of Music and Graduate Performance Diploma from the Peabody Conservatory. Chris was a recipient of the Peabody Merit Award and Howard County Arts Scholarship during his studies with Julian Gray, Ray Chester and Manuel Barrueco at the conservatory. As a founding member of the Aurora Guitar Quartet, recent concert seasons have included concerts in United States, Costa Rica and Japan. Chris also performs as a soloist in The Dunn- Stornant Duo with flautist Rachel Stornant. In addition to classical performances, Chris performs as a studio musician for popular music groups/song writers and is part of a new mix media electronic group in Baltimore with poet Stephen Reichert.

Chris is absolutely amazing and has an extensive repertoire ranging from Baroque and classical to Latin American/Spanish and popular modern arrangements. If you combine styles for your ceremony and cocktail hour, your guests will be “talking” for years to come! Take a listen to this beautiful piece. He has a few professional guitarists in his company, so they are able to handle multiple events on the same day.

Helping Men, Women and Children - One Step at a Time

Part of having a strong belief in Family is doing my part to make sure that each part of the family unit (whomever that may consist of) remains healthy.

My interests in Breast Cancer are not new. It began many years ago while I was studying for my PhD in the Department of Cellular and Molecular biology at Brown University. I spent a number of years working with a protein that we thought was acting as a tumor suppressor in Breast Cancer. Even though my time there is finished, I still want to take an active part in keeping women healthy so that they can further realize their dreams - just as I have.

Maimah Karmo started the Tigerlilly Foundation whose goals are the following...

To educate, empower, advocate for, support and inspire young women affected by breast cancer
To end isolation among young adult breast cancer survivors
To improve the quality of life for young adult breast cancer survivors by creating vigilant self-advocates
To promote ferociously fearless females

Home Wedding - More Pictures

It was truly a gorgeous day - picture perfect really! I would love to share more pictures with you.

The cocktail hour took place in an enormous field. Guest tables were placed on the field as well as by a private pond- giving them a quiet place to reflect and enjoy. A trio of chamber players provided a number of classical selections

We used a mix of square and round tables and tall and short centerpieces. The colors were chocolate and celadon. After going to a whole sale florist, we learned that she love peonies, hydrangea, roses and viburnum. For the cocktail hour, light celadon linens were used. Chocolate satin with natural Chivaris draped the room.

The large tent was placed in one of the fields. Poles draped in fabric and covered with lights provided the most elegant setting for a most terrific evening.

At Home with Pink and Green

I love planning intimate home weddings. I love planning all weddings – but home weddings are special. There is something very unique about getting married somewhere you have such a strong emotional attachment.

Initially, we decided to meet over dinner. I knew this wedding was for us, when the couple was sitting at a table next to us for 15 minutes, and we could all hysterically laugh. At that meeting, I learned that they wanted to marry at their good friend’s home in Southern Maryland. They met each other and fell in love while working as postal workers years ago. They were a very close knit couple, and they wanted to plan an extraordinary home wedding but they were on a tight budget. They had definite ideas on how they wanted it to be, but they looked to us and our connections in the area to make it happen.

The colors were pink and green. The beautiful pond on the property was a natural focal point for the early summer outdoor ceremony. An aisle heavily filled with pink and ivory rose petals lead to a decorated arch that stood right near the water’s edge. Our duck and geese friends provided the perfect touch to the most magical and intimate ceremony. The ceremony was highlighted by the bride performing sign to “I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You” to her groom.

While the guests enjoyed cocktails by the side of the house, and the Bride and Groom were taking pictures, we made sure every single detail was attended to under the tent. The place cards were placed in small pewter chairs, providing a unique touch . The tables draped in pink were topped off by florals in pink and green. Large pink hydrangea plants surrounded the tent. Playing cards doubled as table numbers. Everything was very colorful and festive, which is perfect for a summer wedding.
Even though it rained towards the end, it didn’t dampen this great evening. It was the feeling of love and friendship that overflowed during this wonderful event.

Wicked Willow is my favorite floral designer. The team of Randy Woods and Tina Owens is amazing - truly, and I will tell you why. Every design that comes out of that studio is perfect in every way. When I am working with them, I can give them a vague idea of a color scheme and feeling of the day and they can come up with multiple amazing ideas that will work. If I go to them with specifics on what the couple wants, they still come up with multiple amazing ideas – that then, I can go back to the Bride and Groom with.

Located in Catonsville, I know I can work with them with all of my clients, no matter whether the wedding is located on the Eastern Shore, or in Baltimore, Washington DC, Virginia, Frederick, Hagerstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania – anywhere. Most importantly, their creativity is “out of this world” amazing. I just love doing different things for weddings, because I like to think outside the box. New designs, linens and table arrangements make a wedding so much more unique. I realize that there are a lot of wedding and event planners out there. How are you to filter through, what seems to be an endless amount of choice?

I want to spend a few moments sharing with you how Elegant Event Planning and Design is different - and the different approach I take in planning/coordinating your wedding.

There is absolutely nothing cookie cutter about Elegant Event Planning and Design and our experienced Planners/Consultants. I believe that each of my clients is an individual with different requirements. I take pride in being able to customize our services to meet the needs and budget of each individual. In fact, I do not offer packages. I personally spend the time getting to know you so that the package we create for you will be perfect, the first time.

All of our clients are equally important, whether "day of" or "full event management". We take each wedding seriously and take great care to make sure everything is perfect. We encourage "day of" clients to contact us as soon as possible. We do not restrict the initial contact in any way - whether it's a month prior or a year prior to the wedding day. I always say - the better I know you and your wedding, the better I can advocate for you on your wedding day.

I (Lisa) work personally with each and every client. You will meet with me, and I will be the person working with you during the planning process and on the day of the wedding!

Most importantly, my assistants, planners and I go above and beyond for you and your family. We believe in going the extra mile to not only ensure a successful planning process and seamless wedding day - but that you and your family are happy and stress free.
